Beta-Casein Testing
for a2 Milk®

At The a2 Milk Company we utilise advanced testing techniques in beta-casein protein detection for our products.
Testing takes place at a range of points through our supply chain, including on farm and at manufacturing sites.

We use proprietary protocols for production processes to minimise the chances of A1 protein entering our products at any stage during manufacturing.
We have invested in research and development of testing methods since the Company's inception and own a patented beta-casein testing method.

It starts with the identification and selection of cows with A2/A2-type genetics. This is done through a simple genetic test performed on a tissue sample taken from the cows and involves the analysis of DNA to identify the genotype of the cows to determine whether or not they carry A1-type protein producing genes.
Once identified, these specially selected cows are carefully segregated into a separate herd. The milk produced by these herds is regularly monitored to ensure that the integrity of the herd is maintained. In fact, the majority of our farms are now long-term partners producing exclusively A1-type protein free milk.
Rigorous testing
The milk from herds supplying a2 Milk® is regularly subject to beta-casein protein testing to ensure the integrity of the herd and confirm that there is no A1 protein detectable in the raw milk produced by these farms.
Every batch of milk is tested prior to public release to ensure a2 Milk® reaches the consumer just the way we like it. Pure, and naturally A1 protein free.

Ever since we developed the world's first commercially viable beta-casein testing for fresh milk supply chains over 20 years ago we have continued to improve the accuracy and reliability of our testing technology.
What do we test for?
Absence of A1 protein
What’s important is not the amount of A2-type protein in the milk, it is the absence of A1 protein that makes a2 Milk® special.
Comprehensive detection
Our methods and protocols are expertly designed to detect and measure A1 protein across a range of product types and also to deliver world-leading accuracy, sensitivity and reproducibility in a commercial setting.
The a2 Milk Company utilises advanced techniques in protein detection to ensure the purity of its a2 Milk®.
